His recent masterpiece, A Time for Mercy is the third bo ok in the character trilogy of Jake Brigance. It marks the return of Jake Brigance, the idealistic lawyer in Clanton . Jake Brigance first appeared in A Time to Kill, Grisham’s first novel which charted high globally. Set in the familiar confines of Clanton Mercy delves into the heart of racial prejudice, the , Mississippi, A Time for complexities punishment and the enduring power of justice.

I consider John Grisham as an essential yet fun read for law students not because of the story or the drama but because Grisham’s novels take us readers into the raw nature of a legal system, into the practical world where law is seen as a means. His books give us insights on what it is to be a lawyer and what it takes to make and prove your case. He shows us the importance of believing in yourself and having faith in your client.


This book brings out aspect of Jake Brigance’s character that we, as law students or lawyers need to see and uphold. Jake holds a firm and steadfast commitment to defending the rights of the accused, even when the odds are stacked against him and the weight of the public opinion bears down. He is honest with his clients, respects the court and the opposing counsel and maintains his ethical conduct at all times.


He is a zealous advocate, not afraid to challenge the prosecution or the court when he believes his client is being treated unfairly. His skills of advocacy are beautifully masterful and something that all the readers can admire and dream of. “A Time for Mercy” is yet another Grisham masterpiece that captivates the readers and captures them into the intricate plot, the characters and the thought provoking exploration of the legal system and its impact on individual and society, to the very last page of the novel. It thoroughly challenges the mind and stirs the soul.
